The day before yesterday, the weightlifting competitions of the 10th Spartakiad of the Republic began at the Dinamo Sports Hall. They were opened by the Chairman of the Presidium of the Weightlifting Federation, J. Zariņš.

Everyone who cares about the development of weightlifting in our republic was eagerly and hopefully waiting for the start of the strongmen. There is nothing to hide, in recent years the masters of the "iron game" have not demonstrated the skill that the great athletes A. Diņņikovs, G. Ivančenko, K. Pumpuriņš , V. Pērkons, V. Bročas, A. Sliedis had in their time . Years ago, when going to weightlifting, friends would say: « Let's go watch Artūrs Sliedis! » or: « Today Pumpuriņš will achieve records! »

Since the first championship of the republic, Latvian weightlifters have always been characterized by fighting spirit, a thirst for new records. Of course, now the main task is to restore the former brilliance of our strongmen. I want to believe that we will see new talents at the X Spartakiad competitions. 

The competitions are judged in three groups. In the previous Spartakiad, the best results were achieved by weightlifters from Dinamo and Balvi district.

This year, on the tenth anniversary of the Spartakiad, we will remember the champions of the 1st Spartakiad (1950). Each of them has contributed to the development of Latvian weightlifting. At that time, the first places in the order of weight categories were won by M. Rusoņiks, L. Maulvurfs, K. Zorgenfrejs, M. Ravcovs, J. Grižs, A. Lapidevskis.

56 kg. S. Bizulis 192,5 (82,5+110). 

60 kg. J. Andžāns 230 (100+130). 

67,5 kg. V. Terehovs (all «Daugava») 260 (115+145).
