LATVIA'S ATHLETES - BALTIC CHAMPIONS IN 14 DISCIPLINES * SUCCESSIONS OF RENĀTE LĀCE, HELENA RINGA AND EDVĪNS ZĀĢERS
The traditional Estonian, Lithuanian and Latvian Track and Field Championships ended yesterday at the Tallinn Dinamo Stadium. More than 200 athletes from the three republics, including many Olympic candidates, competed in 37 disciplines. Unfortunately, there were not many high-quality results. This is because a strong, cold wind blew on both days of the competition, which chilled the limbs and particularly affected the well-being of the runners.
Soviet Latvian track and field athletes became champions of the Baltic republics in 14 disciplines, Estonians - in 12, and Lithuanians - in 11 disciplines.

In the javelin throw, Jānis Lūsis slightly improved his result from this year (77.54) against a headwind. A surprise came from Cēsinlek's Laimonis Kivlenieks, who exceeded the mark for the first time in the discus throw 50-meter line (51.66 m) and unexpectedly won second place, leaving behind such Lithuanian celebrities as A. Baltušņikas and V. Jaras. In the shot put, Arturs Sliede also set a personal record - 15.95 m .
In the decathlon, Jānis Lankas was only 83 points short of the master of sports norm. There is no doubt that a talented athlete who progresses from race to race will achieve this with ease in the best of weather conditions.
