The Spartakiad weightlifting competitions were held at the Dinamo Sports Hall, while freestyle wrestling masters competed in Jelgava. Both championships were also republican championships.
Weightlifters tried to break records many times, but only the two heavyweights, RPI lecturer Artūrs Sliede and RPI student Kārlis Pumpuriņš, broke one republican record each.
In the lightest weight categories, rather mediocre results were achieved. The champion in the lightest weight was V. Polyakovs («Daugava») — 262.5 kg, in the lightest weight Vitaly Anikins (ASK) — 325 kg, in the lightest weight Vitaly's older brother Vladimir Anikins (ASK) — 375 kg. The dynamic A. Dinnikov lost to him by 10 kg.
In the lightest weight category, J. Kļaviņš («Dinamo») won - 362.5 kg. Then, in all weight categories, the Dynamo team - students of the USSR Honored Coach M. Fraifelds - won. In the welterweight category, the champion A. Majasins lifted 427.5 kg in the triathlon. In the middleweight category, the world champion G. Ivančenko competed. This time, he wanted to win only a gold medal and in the triathlon, he settled for 455 kg, which was still 35 kg more than the second-place winner J. Baranovskis (ASK).
The first five-hundred-pounders began to appear in the light heavyweight division — there were a total of them in this championship.
six. V. Pērkons from Dinamo had a serious "shrinkage" with S. Poltoratski (Daugava). Pērkons reached 195 kg in the clean and jerk and 505 kg in the clean and jerk. Both results put Pērkons on the list of All-Union "Dinamo" record holders. Poltoratski lost to him by only 5 kg. On Sunday, 18 athletes competed in both heavyweights, and the competition lasted five hours. Kārlis Pumpuriņš from Dinamo even tried to attack the world record in the clean and jerk, but this time he could not hold the 203.5 kg bar. In the clean and jerk, he nevertheless set a new republican and All-Union "Dinamo" record - 195.5 kg and improved the previous record by 3 kg. In the snatch and clean and jerk, the results were more modest, and Pumpuriņš became the champion with a total of 515 kg in the clean and jerk. The dynamic V. Brochs won second place with 500 kg.
In the second heavyweight category, Artūrs Sliede started the competition with a new republican record. In the clean and jerk, he lifted 190.5 kg and improved his previous record by 4.5 kg . In the snatch, however, he managed to lift only 147.5 kg, and Sliede lost by 5 kg to his main competitor G. Kalns («Daugava»). In the clean and jerk, the heavyweight reached 205 kg, thus in the triathlon he only managed to repeat his republican record — 542.5 kg . With a personal record (520 kg), G. Kalns won the silver medal. In third place was the wrestler R. Abeltiņš (472.5 kg).
In the team standings, Dinamo's weightlifters have 382 points, and Daugava's have 339 points.
