Arturs' first success in weightlifting - in December 1965, without consulting a coach, only through self-study, he completed the 1st sports class in the triathlon total - 420 kg. In October 1967, he completed the master of sports norm for the first time - 452.5 kg. Arturs is a five-time Latvian champion for adults and the owner of forty national records . No one in Latvia will ever beat his records in the standing press (206 kg) and the triathlon total (565 kg), because in 1973 the press was abolished. Arturs' record in the singles (370 kg) remained unbeaten for 15 years until 1988, when the record holder's crown was taken over by Raimonds Bergmanis. Interestingly, in the distant 1969, Arturs took over the heavyweight record holder's crown directly from Raimonds' father Olgerts and kept it for 19 years .
