The Jānis Spāres Cup weightlifting competition was held in Lipetsk. Riga resident Artūrs Sliede won the second heavyweight category, lifting 427.5 kg in a triple event.

Artūrs, who is already in his sixth decade, is still involved in sports and recently broke the Latvian veteran record in powerlifting .
