Yesterday, the Dinamo Central Council individual and team weightlifting championships ended in Riga with the fights of both heavyweight athletes. It is pleasing that the championship was truly worthy of a major competition.
The greatest success was achieved by Moscow's representative in the first heavyweight category, former European champion Valery Yakubavskis, who lifted 206.5 kg in the fourth (additional) attempt, improving the world record held by J. Talts by 0.5 kg. V. Yakubavskis' performance in the triathlon total was also impressive - 575 kg.
A new Latvian record for the first heavyweight athletes in the snatch was set by Valentīns Bročs with 197.5 kg, which is 2 kg more than the previous achievement of his club member K. Pumpuriņš. Pumpuriņš himself tried his hand at 200 kg, but the old misfortune: you can get the weight over your head, but you can't fix it. Yesterday was a "black day" for athletes in this weight category. V. Jakubovskis twice failed to lift the starting weight, both our strongmen settled for a modest 140 kg. This also prevented both Latvian representatives from showing their best results in the triathlon - V. Bročs came third, K. Pumpuriņš - fourth,
In this weight category, Riga resident Viktors Kirejevs (coach L. Gutermans) started the competition as a candidate for master of sports, finished as a master of sports - 477.5 kg, and seventh place. Only a failure in the clean and jerk prevented E. Breikša from fulfilling the master of sports norm.
The start of our republic's record holder in the second heavyweight Artūrs Sliede was excellent. In the third attempt, A. Sliede pressed 197.5 kg and improved his Latvian record by 0.5 kg. In the snatch, 157.5 kg was recorded in the third attempt, and the republic's record was improved by 2.5 kg. Such a performance in the first two exercises also promised a record in the triathlon. In the first attempt, Artūrs lifted 195 kg, and the record in the triathlon was already improved by 5 kg. In the second attempt, 205 kg was recorded, in the third 210 kg ! M. Fraifeld's student Artūrs Sliede improved his record in the triathlon by 20 kg at once! The new record is 565 kg. This is already worthy of a real man.
But at the end of the competition, the informant announces another pleasant news:
- The Latvian Dynamo won the team competition, leaving behind club members from Ukraine and the KPFSR.
Good end to the competition!
