"I'm beating like a naked man through nettles," is how the preparation and conduct of the Riga Masters can best be described. On Tuesday, at the meeting of representatives and judges, it was not yet clear where the competition would take place, as "Dinamo" refused its promised venue.

Finally, the premises were provided by "Ziemeļblāzma", but Saturday was a working day, the participants had to travel far, and there were no showers. In the end, they managed to get a hall at the aviation institute. The start of the competition was pleasant. One of the oldest and most active weightlifting veterans, All-Union category judge V. Shmidbergs, was presented with the Certificate of Honor and a commemorative medal of the Central Council of the USSR SBOS for his long-term work. However, the results were not encouraging. Only 56 athletes participated. In the first group, when the teams of the associations competed, the teams of «Dinamo» and «Daugava» did not start for unknown reasons. ASK won without any competition. In the third group, two teams from each district of Riga were supposed to participate, but only the railway team of the Moscow district started.

"Barbell or shot put?" was what they wrote about A. Sliede last year. This year he made a choice - the barbell. A. Sliede competed in the People's Spartakiad competition for the republican team and, it seems, tried to fulfill the master's norm five times. This time he succeeded. A. Sliede perfectly pressed 150 kg, snatched 127.5, because 132.5 stayed ahead once, but flew over my head the second time, and pushed 175. Total 452.5!
