Record holder comment
Telegraph agency information from Finland was laconic: in the city of Pori, Finn Karlo Kangasniemi broke world records in the light heavyweight category, reaching 515 kg in the snatch and 175.5 kg in the clean and jerk (the record set by K. Pumpuriņš on June 29 was 175 kg).
I met Kārlis Pumpuriņš, who lost the world record but still holds the USSR record, on the street near the Dinamo stadium a few hours after receiving this news.
— What do you say? ... Oh, corrected then. Unbelievable. I secretly hoped that my record would hold until the Mehiko Olympics.
— How would you comment on these achievements of Kangasniemi?
— They are, of course, great, but it was hardly necessary to do so: to "shoot" the powder before the Olympics, to jump
strength... The main start is still ahead.
— Well, now there's nothing left for me to do but think about the New Chord.
— Yes. We have to try to pose some new riddles to our opponents. In the fall we will go (Latvian national team — A A.) to Poland, then we will try there too ...
In this conversation, which also included K. Pumpuriņš's trainer M. Fraifelds and the talented heavyweight Arturs Sliede , two numbers were mentioned that would express a possible record. What are they? Let it remain a secret…
