Records at the Black Sea

05.03.1970 (Sports)

The «Dinamo» CP individual championship in weightlifting took place this year on the Black Sea coast - in Feodosia. According to the results of this tournament, athletes were selected who would compete in the final of the USSR championship. Besides, the Riga Dynamos did not want to interrupt the excellent series of starts that began last year. So they prepared for the competition very seriously.

When I boarded the train on which the athletes were going south, I noticed that G. Ivanchenko, K. Pumpuriņa , V. Lebedev were not sick. The team doctor S. Gavartins took the temperature of A. Sliedes , V. Bročs, M. Rauhmans in turn . The diagnosis was laconic - flu.

But the team continued to "live" and prepare for the start. I understood this immediately after arriving in Feodosia. The meeting was short and specific, the senior coach M. Freifeld spoke briefly and specifically: You have to watch your weight, you have to train. The guys stayed in a hotel right on the Black Sea coast. Everything here felt like home - the sea, the golden sand. Only the waves reminded you harshly and menacingly - there will be a fight soon. The dynamic Latvian team immediately became the center of attention. Opponents, coaches, referees - Everyone was worried about one thing - what the Riga guys would be capable of this year. But the guys were shyly silent - the barbell would show.

And, finally, it was time to show off. After the opening parade, the judges called the featherweights onto the weightlifting floor.

It is always difficult to start first. Everyone is "sick" about him, he must not only set the tone, but also achieve a high result. However, the team's favorite, the sharp-tongued and always cheerful A. Dinnikov is calm, does not pay attention to anything, only looks at the doctor and coach all the time. Among the opponents are the USSR and world record holder S. Ulyanov (Kazakhstan), the USSR youth champion A. Agafonov (KPFSR), a total of 12 masters of sports. In the press, Aleksandrs records 115, in the snatch 110, in the clean and jerk 142.5 kg (a Latvian record). As a result, an excellent triathlon total of 367.5 kg is set, a new Latvian and "Dinamo" CP record is set. Dinnikov becomes the champion of the association both in the triathlon and in all individual exercises.

In the welterweight division, the main fight was between V. Ryzhenkov (Moscow) and A. Mayasin. I have been watching Mayasin's fights for many years, but the way he handled the barbell in Feodosia, I will never forget. In the bench press he lifted 130, 135, 140 kg in succession. Then the fourth set at 146 kg and a new Latvian and «Dinamo» CP record! Having lifted 130 and pushed 162.5 kg, our famous veteran deservedly climbed to the top step of the winners' podium. Majasins' total lift of 432.5 kg is also a new Latvian record.

In the middleweight category, A. Mayasin's student V. Rogachev made his debut in such a large-scale competition for the first time. The beginner on the "big stage" was not afraid of the experienced rivals and replaced the ill world record holder G. Ivančenko. Lifted a total of 425 kg in the triathlon, He won first place and became a master of sports.

And then the last - the day of the heavy weights. V. Pērkons as always quiet and outwardly calm, V. Bročs is worried, can't find a place for himself, A. Sliede is climbing the sand of the seashore with dignity. Everyone has one thought: get to the barbell as soon as possible.

In the light heavyweight category, a rare powerful "company" has gathered - USSR silver medalist A. Tsarenko (Ukraine), international class masters of sports A. Pritz (Lithuania), V. Ustyuzhins (Ukraine). Already in the snatch, everyone "spoke out in full voice" Pritz 170, Tsarenko 160, Pērkons 157.5, Ustyuzhins 155 kg. What will the rivals show in the tempo exercises? This worries everyone, except Vili Pērkons. He is calm and concentrated. Demonstrating excellent technique in the snatch, Vili "puts his opponents on his shoulders". 137.5… 142.5... 145 kg. In the clean and jerk, Pērkons strengthens his superiority, lifting 185 kg. With a total of 487.5 kg in the triathlon, Vili Pērkons becomes the fourth champion of the association of our republic.

In the first heavyweight category, V. Bročs won the undivided sympathy of the audience. Despite the recent illness, he overcomes weights that we could only dream of recently. Press 175 kg (Latvian record), snatch 135, clean and jerk 197.5 kg (Latvian record).

With a total of 507.5 kg in the triathlon (also a Latvian record), Valentīns becomes the association champion and the third member of the "five hundred club" in Latvia. Watching him start, there is no doubt that he will soon also 515-520 kg will be enough.

In the heavyweight division, A. Sliede is calm before the start, psychologically prepared for the fight with his main rival N. Kozincev (Ukraine). His nerves are in order, so 8 out of 9 attempts are successful. In the clean and jerk, Arturs shows 177.5 kg (Latvian record) . N. Kozincevs is capable of 185 kg. In the snatch, our athlete so easily "flies" 147.5 kg over his head that you don't want to believe it. And yet: 147.5 kg and Artur's second Latvian record in this tournament . But Kozincevs has 150 kg. The push is the deciding factor, Kozincevs pushes 195 kg and is finished. A. Sliede pushes 197.5 kg in the second attempt . M. Fraifelds decides: we must fight for victory. We must lift 207.5 kg. Weight on the chest, and... only a small inaccuracy does not allow to record this enormous weight. In the triathlon, Artur lifted 522.5 kg (a new Latvian record)  and took second place. A. Sliede immediately "added" 12.5 kg to his record from last year, but the year has just begun...

In the lightweight category, M. Rauhmans set his first Latvian record in the 130 kg bench press. However, the doctor forbade him to continue fighting... In total, the Latvian Dynamos won 5 championship titles in the triathlon, 8 in individual exercises, 10 second places, and one third place. They set two «Dinamo» CPs and 11 Latvian records.

Inestimable merit in achieving this success belongs to the Honored Coach of the USSR M. Fraifeld, who is able to realistically assess the strengths of his students and confidently leads his team to the highest peaks of sportsmanship. The team was greatly assisted by doctor S. Gavartin. According to unofficial information, 10 athletes from our republic were allowed to compete in the final of the USSR championships. We look forward to new successes!
