* At the end of the year, seven new Latvian records were set in the republican "Dinamo" weightlifting competitions. The most pleasant event was the entry of our second heavyweight athlete Arturs Sliede into the "five hundred" club. In the triathlon, he lifted 510 kg and set a republican record. Arturs also achieved records in the snatch (143 kg) and the clean and jerk (200 kg) . The other four records were set by the light-heavyweight strongman, candidate for the USSR national team Aleksandrs Diņņikovs - in the press - 118 kg, in the snatch - 113 kg, in the clean and jerk - 140 kg, and in the triathlon - 365 kg.

* The international hundred-square checkers tournament has ended in Holland, with home team Sijbrands and Virsma sharing 1st and 2nd place with 6.5 points out of a possible nine. Andris Andreiko was half a point behind and came in 3rd place. Kupermans was fourth with five points.

* Valdis Zvirbulis, a literary contributor to the magazine "Dambrete", achieved outstanding success in the Latvian SSR international checkers championship. Ten wins and three draws brought him his eleventh victory in the republican championships and a 2.5-point lead over his competitors. Also at the top of the table (in order of places won): J. Rimša , E. Mērins, E. Slavinskis. B Gurevičs — 9 points each, L. Zālītis 8.5 p. , J. Saušs — 7.5 p . and A. Kalpiņš — 6 p.

* In the USSR basketball championship game, Tartu's Kalev lost to the ACSK team 62:78 (34:43). Spartak Leningrad defeated Lokomotiv Alma-Ata 89:60 (43:35).
