Three Records in One Hour

RPI instructor Artūrs Sliede broke three of his previous republican records in weightlifting in one hour on Sunday. A record-breaking attempt competition was held at the "Dinamo" sports hall, in which two dynamists, students of coach M. Fraifelds, Artūrs Sliede in the second heavyweight and Vilis Pērkons in the first heavyweight, began their "attacks on records". 

At first, it seemed that Sliede's recklessness would not succeed. In the clean and jerk, he tried to improve his Latvian record by 8.5 kg. However, on the third attempt, he succeeded and the athlete lifted 186 kg!  The record was missed in the snatch, as Sliede reached "only" 150 kg. When the clean and jerk began, it again seemed that our heavyweight was reckless - 195 kg on the bar. To achieve a new record in the triathlon, 190 kg would be enough. Sliede nevertheless lifted the heavy bar on the first attempt. And then 205 kg on the bar - a weight that no Latvian weightlifter has ever lifted. With the first attempt, Sliede also lifted this weight and improved his previous record by 2 kg. The triathlon result - 540 kg is the fourth best in the Soviet Union this year .

V. Pērkons' start was less successful. In the triathlon, he achieved a very good result - 490 kg (in the clean and jerk - 165 kg, in the clean and jerk - 180 kg, in the snatch - 145.5 kg). In the snatch, the republican record was repeated.
