The world ex-record holder, Riga Dynamite Kārlis Pumpuriņš, was a real "bird of misfortune" this year. In the spring, at the national championships in Vilnius, he did not lift the starting weight and... zero in the triathlon. At the VIII Spartakiad tournament of the Republic - the same. But Kārlis was in excellent shape! And more. It was very difficult to fit into the personal kilogram norm of the light heavyweight, before the competition it was always necessary to "check" the effect of the Finnish sauna. Then Kārlis, after consulting with coach M. Fraifeld, decided to move to the next - the first heavyweight. And, here are the results of this decision. At the USSR Cup in Dnepropetrovsk, RPI student Kārlis Pumpuriņš lifted 540 kilograms in the triathlon. A new republican record, improved by 30 (!) kg, and the norm of the USSR international master of sports was met! In the individual exercises, K. Pumpuriņš's performances were as follows: in the press 192.5 kg (new Latvian record), in the snatch 145 kg, in the clean and jerk - 202.5 kg (new Latvian record).  Excellent! With this result, K. Pumpuriņš won the silver medal in the first heavyweight. The winner was Minsk weightlifter V. Jakubovskis 545 kg (190+155+200). In third place was Leningrad FKI student P. Pervušin - 527.5 kg (165+162.5 + 200). The same performance was shown in the triathlon by two Ukrainian athletes - J. Jablonevskis and J. Onishchenko.

Yesterday, in the second heavyweight competition, a new phenomenal world record was set in the triathlon in the total set by V. Alekseev - 625 kg (222.5+172.5 +230). In the clean and jerk, the outstanding Soviet strongman set new world records - 222 and 229.5 kg. The second in the triathlon was S. Batishchevs - 575 kg (205+160+210), the third - G. Ryabokons - 550 kg (200+150+ 200).

The start of the dynamic Latvian RPI teacher Artūrs Sliede was also pleasing. He lifted 542.5 kg in the triathlon, improving his recently set republican record by 2.5 kg.  A. Sliede came in fourth place.
