World Record Achieved in Riga

Yesterday, the All-Union «Dinamo» weightlifting championship ended in Riga. Strongmen have been fighting in the «Dinamo» sports hall for several days, but the main events only began yesterday, when the heavyweights took to the bar. In the first heavyweight category, Muscovite V. Jakubovskis lifted 206.5 kg in the press. The world and USSR record of Estonian J. Talts was improved by half a kilogram. The second best result for Riga resident V. Bročs — 197.5 kg — is a new republican record. Our previous record holder K. Pumpuriņš came in third place with 190 kg.
The new world record holder V. Yakubovskis reached 160 kg in the snatch and 210 kg in the clean and jerk. He also had an excellent total in the triathlon - 575 kg. V. Ustyuzhkin came in second with 542.5 kg (Ukraine), third V. Brochs — 532.5, fourth K. Pumpuriņš — 530 kg.
In the second heavyweight, the record holder RPI teacher Artūrs Sliede successfully competed. In the press, a new Latvian record — 197.5 kg, a republican record also in the snatch — 157.5 kg and a repeated record in the clean and jerk — 210 kg. In the triathlon, a new record — 565 kg . No athlete in the history of the republic has lifted such a weight. However, V. Kuzmins (KPFSR) became the champion of «Dinamo», who lifted 570 kg, and in the overall standings Sliede took second place.
Riga resident V. Pērkons won the light heavyweight category, reaching 507.5 kg in the triathlon and setting a new republican record. G. Ivanchenko did not start in the middleweight category. Muscovite V. Ryzhenkov won with an excellent result - 500 kg. He is the fourth athlete in the world who has lifted five hundred in the middleweight category. Our younger generation weightlifters J. Klavins, A. Titarenko and S. Solomonovs fulfilled the standards of masters of sports for the first time. The strongmen of our republic won the «Dinamo» championship.
