From June 28 to July 3, competition flags flew in Riga's sports centers. On the treadmills, sports fields, and swimming pools, 1,600 of our republic's best young bodybuilders competed for the XIII names of the winners of the school youth Spartakiad.

Who is not familiar with the names of young track and field athletes Renāte Lāce, Spodra Riekstiņa, Arturs Sliede  and many others? This time too, they pleased with good achievements. Riga Secondary School 2 student Renāte Lāce became a three-time winner of the Spartakiad in the 100 m run, 80 m hurdles and high jump. Renāte jumped 5 m 85 cm, improving the republican youth record by 6 cm! This achievement is only 2 cm behind the republican record for women!

Dzintars Steinbergs from Jelgava became the two-time winner of the Spartakiad. First places — in discus and hammer throwing. In the shot put for boys, J. Krūmiņš from Madona won, beating Arturs Sliedis . His shot flew 14 m 91 cm far.

There were many unexpected but pleasant surprises in the track and field competitions, and they were introduced on the first day of the competition by Liepāja Secondary School No. 1 student Ligita Šiliņa, who performed 1 m 55 cm in the high jump and for the first time reached the 1st sports class norm. At the same time, a competition was also held between the 4 best secondary school teams for the right to participate in the All-Union School Youth Zonal Spartakiad in Minsk. The victory was won by the track and field athletes of Riga Secondary School No. 5.

The best gymnasts are preparing for the All-Union School Youth Zonal Spartakiad, which will be held in Minsk from August 20 to 27. The Republican Children's Sports School previously organized a work-training camp at the Bauska District Imantas Sudmalys collective farm and collective farm "Socialism Path". Here, the young athletes not only actively participated in the work, but also improved their sports skills in order to successfully defend the sports honor of our republic in Minsk.
