The Republican Children's Sports School began preparations for the 7th All-Union School Youth Spartakiad on Sunday with the autumn test competitions in track and field. The competitions took place in Jelgava, at the "Daugava" stadium. Many young track and field athletes from Riga participated in them, but very few from Jelgava.

The first competition was a pleasant surprise. Arturs Sliede from the "Daugava" children's sports school threw a 5 kg shot put 14.97 m. This is a new republican best achievement in the boys' group.  The record set by V. Ozols in 1955 was beaten by 8 cm. The personal record in the high jump of 1.48 m was achieved by Tatjana Taškina from Cēsis.

Guntis Grīnbergs from Talsi showed the second sports class result in javelin throw for the third time this year. His achievement was 55.53 m. Renāte Lāce  jumped 5.40 m on the heavy runway. Vija Zariņa's discus throw of 36.58 m fell close to the second-class mark. The results in the other disciplines were weaker.
