Apollon's First Anniversary

The Jelgava athletics club Apollons celebrated its tenth anniversary last week. With the participation of Latvia's strongest athletes. The greatest powerlifters from Ogre, Aizkraukle, Talsi, Ķekava, Kuldiga, Riga, Dobele and Jelgava gathered at the Daugava Sports Hall to compete in the bench press. 

The first anniversary was quite significant for the organizing club's athlete Aleksandrs Radzevičs, who won all ten tournaments. Veteran Aleksandrs Smelovs could also repeat this success, but at the anniversary event he was overtaken by Kēkava's Kārlis Bulāns by two and a half kilos. As is customary on such occasions, the anniversary was also marked with new records. In the senior class, the silver medalist of the competition Jānis Bidlauskis from Ķekava showed it - 147.5 kg. In the super heavyweight (over 125 kg) he twice lost to Voldemārs Šulcs from Ogre, first - 147.5 kg, in the last attempt - one and a half quintals.

We must commend the weightlifting veteran Artūrs Sliede , who was third in the weight category up to 125 kg, competing with younger rivals, but is proud that he succeeds more and more with each subsequent race - this time 135 kg . The day before yesterday I met the gray-haired athlete on the streets of Riga. My schoolmate said: - Believe it or not, but in the near future one and a half hundredweight will be mine.
