23.08.1962 (Sports)

The VACP track and field championships for juniors and BSS students took place for four days at the Kherson “Avangarda” stadium. Our republic was represented at this event by the young track and field athletes of “Daugava”.

The race took place in unusual weather conditions, with temperatures in the shade reaching 47° on some days. Despite this, many young athletes managed to break their personal bests.

Moscow sprinter Aleksandrs Perovs successfully started. In both sprint distances, he missed the master of sports norm by 0.1 sec. (10.5 and 21.5). Perov's result in the 200 m race is a new All-Union achievement for young people. "Daugava" BSS student Vadims Jakušonoks achieved a personal record of 11.4. In the high jump, Juris Sliede, overcoming 1.80 m, won third place.  Voldemārs Veršilo is developing into a good track and field athlete, who this time made 3 m 60 cm in the pole vault.

Two prize-winning places were won by Edvīns Freidenfelds (shot put 15.77. discus 49.10). Among our girls, the best results were achieved by Dzintra Mliluma (high jump 5.35), Ingrīda Galdiņa (400 m - 1:00.6) and Maija Balcerbula (pentathlon - 3644 points). In the sports school competition, where 21 teams participated, «Daugava» BSS won the 13th place.
