Record Holder for a Moment

At the Latvian Powerlifting Championships held at the Jelgava National Sports Hall Daugava, 11 new national records were achieved for women and seniors, of course, in the respective categories.


Among the participants were strongmen and strongmen from Jēkabpils, Riga, Aizkraukle, Ķekava, Ogre and Balvi. The host city was represented by the clubs Apollons, RAF and Tonuss. The women's competitions were dominated by Jēkabpils, as the athletes from the city of Daugavskrast set four national records. The main culprit was Larisa Elbakidze, who improved and improved her own record weights seven times in these competitions. Her final records in squats with a barbell on her shoulders - 105 kg, in pull - 137.5 kg and in the triathlon total - 287.5 kg. At one point, Olga Miglāne, a resident of Larisa, also held the record, recording 92.5 kg in squats. Both competed in the weight category up to 60 kg. We should also add that Miglāne came in second place in the total - 257.5 kg. Lilija Burova from Jelgava also broke the Latvian record, lifting 130 kg in the under 75 kg category. Her total was 255 kg.

Seniors also had a great time. In the category up to 90 kg, international class master Kārlis Bulāns from Ķekava won the triple jump, recording a round seven centners. A new record for him

in the bench press 160.5 kg. Kārlis squatted with 240 kg on the dumbbells, in the pull he recorded three centners in the first attempt, applying the European senior record weight for the next acts - 321 kg. This time he was close to success.


An interesting “squeeze” took place in the category up to 125 kg. Especially in the pull. First, the versatile Riga athlete Artūrs Sliede set a new national record of 212.5 kg. True, after 20 minutes he was surpassed by Jānis Bidlauskis from Ķekava, adding another two and a half kilos. However, in the other exercises, the Ķekava native is temporarily more formidable, who also achieved a record squat of 192.5 kg and the same performance in the sum of three disciplines - 552.5 kg. In the super heavyweight competition, Voldemārs Šulcs from Ogre added a point to the record harvest in these competitions, lifting a barbell of 152.5 kg.

Up to 125 kg. Jānis Bidlauskis 552.5 kg (192.5+145+215), 

Artūrs Sliede 520 kg (175+132.5+212.5) 

Over 125 kg. Voldemars Schulz 527.5 kg (190+152.5+185).


Larisa Elbakidze (according to Malone's table) and Kārlis Bulāns (according to Schwartz's table) were recognized as the absolute champions. The next powerlifting competition at home will be the bench press on June 8 in Jelgava.


The European Junior Championships will take place in Prague from June 9 to 17. Latvia will be represented in this tournament by the absolute national champion in this age group, Rinalds Dimiņš, and coach Edmunds Jansons.
